It's great to st...Clams have teeth.
Who knew?!

It's great to start to learn a little about the healthy aquatic animal community that apparently exists in our little ponds.

Would love to know more.Stephen Packardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01811489977185760340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30877168.post-42397765441239253552013-02-06T09:13:20.319-08:002013-02-06T09:13:20.319-08:00Everything you have is native. The elongated snail...Everything you have is native. The elongated snails are Stagnicola elodes, the marsh pondsnail. They used to be abundant in NE IL when there were more marshes, and are still considered common in IL. You don’t see them in streams but they are pond-small lake inhabitants. The rounded snails are Helisoma sp. (either trivolvis or anceps), the marsh rams-horn snail. The little clams are Sphaerium sp., fingernail clams, and can be found in ponds lakes and streams. I can only get a species by looking at their teeth thru a dissecting scope. Others can do the ID with a good hand lens. They are considered an annual organism though a few may survive for two years. Interestingly, they are ovoviviparous and brood the young internally before they spit out the fully formed juvenile clams at about 2 mm in size.
Take care
Roger
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
